Can a wheat-free diet help you lose weight?

First, the trend was low fat diets, then low carb diets and now a new diet trend seems to be catching on.

People with Celiac disease and gluten intolerance feel much better without wheat in their diets.

But does that mean everyone should consider it?

If you’re looking to lose weight, one author says ditching wheat might be your best bet.

Dr. William Davis, author of the best selling diet book “Wheat Belly” says giving up wheat will benefit your waistline.

“Belly fat shrinks, joint pain shrinks… lots of joint pain goes away,” says Dr. Davis.

Dr. Davis also says wheat-free diets can help acid reflux, irritable bowel symptoms, blood sugar and even prevent heart disease.

“Wheat reaches into many aspects of health… and removing it leads to unexpected improvements in multiple aspects of health,” says Davis.

The reason behind that, he says, is Gliadin.

Gliadin is a protein found in gluten that Dr. Davis says increases appetite while gluten itself creates inflammation.

However, his theories are controversial and in some cases unproven.

Registered dietician Lindy Kennedy disagrees with the claims, and says it’s the quantity and the portion sizes people are eating that lead them to battle the bulge.

Dieticians do agree that processed foods containing wheat can contribute to weight gain and high blood sugar.

However, whole grains are also an important part of a healthy diet. In fact, studies have linked whole grains to a lower risk of diabetes and heart disease while reducing insulin sensitivity, which may lead to a lower body weight.
