MONTREAL – Just over a month after Global Montreal visited Matthew Schreindorfer in his Laval home, his wife Katia Luciani told our reporter Rachel Lau he had successfully undergone a much needed bone marrow transplant.

On Friday, June 26, Schreindorfer took to Facebook to let everyone know that he had received the final bill for his time in New York.

“We’re so happy to inform you all that the our crowdfunding efforts were enough to cover the entirety of the treatment cost! The tally came up just under 810,000$!” he wrote.

Any extra funds will be donated to blood cancer research and facilities.

Schreindorfer had been diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) last summer, just two months after getting married to his high school sweetheart.

After treatment failed in Quebec, he took part in a costly experimental treatment in New York.

The expensive gene therapy was funded by an online campaign that raised over $800,000.

In April, after months of grueling treatment in the U.S., Matthew came home and announced he was in full remission.

Despite the successful therapy, Schreindorfer still needed the bone marrow transplant.

He underwent the procedure on Friday at the Maisonneuve-Rosemont hospital.

The transplant was made possible thanks to a donation of blood-forming stem cells from an unknown donor.

Schreindorfer still faces a long road to recovery.
