A Port Moody elementary school is taking teaching kids how to do business a lot further than just learning how to count cash.
Today at Aspenwood Elementary in Port Moody, dozens of home-made products were being sold by young entrepreneurs.
Up for sale – bird houses, scented playdough, pencils, bookmarks, jewelry and even dream catchers.
The students were challenged with inventing a product and presenting a business plan, learning everything from how to start a business, to marketing and operations.
It’s just the second time Aspenwood has held an entrepreneurship fair, and this year over 160 children are participating.
Their teacher Ann Kirkhope says they have been blown away by how enthusiastic children get when they are given freedom to come up with their own product.
“It is teaching them another aspect beyond reading, writing and math,” says Kirkhope. “It gives them an opportunity to look out into the world and see what they can do as adults, learning how to handle money and give back.”
A portion of all the money students make today is also earmarked for the charity of their choice.
