TORONTO – A pair of BASE jumpers have been leaping off the CN Tower this week as part of a promotional video for the upcoming Pan Am Games.
The intrepid parachutists have made several leaps from the 553-metre tower Tuesday and Wednesday morning.
Morning commuters took to social media to question if what they saw was real, or merely a result of early morning fatigue.
According to media reports, the stunt was part of a promotional video for the 2015 Toronto Pan Am and Parapan Am Games, although organizers failed to provide many details.
The BASE jumpers leapt from the deck where the EdgeWalk takes place, a height of 356 metres above the city, according to the CN Tower website.
Prior to this week’s stunt, stuntman Dar Robinson was the only person to have made a sanctioned jump from the tower. Robinson played Christopher Plummer’s stunt double for the heist movie Highpoint in 1979.
Steelworker William Eustance, who was working on the building at the time, also BASE jumped off the tower in 1974. He was later fired from his job and fined.
The Pan Am Games run from July 10 – 26, with the Parapan Am Games to follow Aug. 7-15. The event will bring more than 6,600 athletes from 41 countries to the city, where they will compete in 36 Pan Am sports and 15 Parapan Am sports.
