Meet Wilbur — an unusual canine companion

WATCH: Meet Wilbur, a rescue pig and regular at the Canine Adventure Den Daycare in Vancouver. Asa Rehman reports.

Like a lot of rescues, Wilbur’s part of the family. He jumps on the sofa and watches TV. He also hangs out with his owner at her business Canine Adventure Den Daycare in Vancouver.

The only thing is Wilbur, who plays with the dogs at the daycare, is a 75-pound teacup pig.

Kristy MacGregor adopted Wilbur in Edmonton after seeing an online advertisement on Kijiji. According to the pig breeder who rescued Wilbur, he had been abused by dogs at his original home. The woman couldn’t keep the pig and decided to try to adopt him out. MacGregor was visiting for the weekend and instantly fell in love with the portly pig.

A year after his rescue, he’s just another member of the MacGregor family. Wilbur accompanies her to work a few times a week and, considered he was abused by dogs, gets along well with the furry daycare visitors.

“He likes to be lazy, he has free range of the yard and hangs at home on the sofa,” she says with a laugh.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

“Or when he wants to come to work, he’s really good with the dogs and he’ll walk around and visit the neighbours too.”

Not just another pretty porker, Wilbur also tried an agility course last week — just like his canine companions, and wasn’t too bad at it.

“We’re going to try to lose a bit of that belly and then he can do a bit more agility.”

As fun as Wilbur may be, MacGregor warns they are hard pets to own and wouldn’t recommend them for everyone.

“They’re so incredibly smart. He opens kitchen cupboards and all the drawers and takes everything out and inspects them. So you have to keep them busy.”

Along with keeping Wilbur busy, MacGregor says you need to have a lot of patience.

“[Pigs] are more sensitive than dogs. Dogs tend to go with the flow.”
