Alberta teen facing terror-related charges denied bail

EDMONTON — A Beaumont teenager accused of attempting to join a terrorist organization was denied bail on Wednesday.

In March, the 17-year-old was arrested by the RCMP Integrated National Security Enforcement Team and charged under the Terrorism Act. He is accused of trying to flee the country to participate in a terrorist activity.

He’s facing two charges:

  • Attempting to leave Canada to participate in activity of a terrorist group
  • Attempting to leave Canada to commit offence that is terrorist activity

Court documents say the alleged offences involve the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant and are to have taken place on or about March 8 in or near Beaumont, Edmonton, Calgary “and elsewhere.”

The bail issue was before the courts on May 22, but the judge reserved her decision for May 27.

In April, provincial court Judge Steven Andrew granted a 30-day psychiatric assessment for the teen.

His identity can’t be revealed due to his age, and no other details have been released.
