Miracle Weekend: Hans’ story of survival and hope

VANCOUVER – Hans is just one of many children who have been helped by the donations collected during the Miracle Weekend for B.C. Children’s Hospital.

When he was born, nothing was wrong, but five hours later he became cold and unresponsive. Doctors thought he might have a heart problem and it turned out Hans was critically ill with a heart condition.

Two emergency cardiac procedures were done on Hans at B.C. Children’s Hospital during his first four days of life. He had a very rare heart defect.

Dr. Martin Hosking with B.C. Children’s said in the history of their hospital they have seen maybe five children with similar conditions to Hans.

At eight months old, he had his first open-heart surgery.

When he was six, he had his second open-heart surgery. The changes were immediate. He can now run and play and he no longer has cold hands.

He is now the healthiest he has ever been and even though he may need another procedure later in life, he is doing very well at this time.

“B.C. Children’s Hospital has given us hope that he may have a healthy, long, normal life,” said Jitesh Rana, Hans’ father.
