INDIANAPOLIS – IndyCar driver James Hinchcliffe was released from the hospital Wednesday, nine days after his wreck during Indianapolis 500 practice left him with a life-threatening leg injury.

Series officials say the 28-year-old Canadian is expected to make a full recovery. He has not yet been cleared to resume racing.

Hinchcliffe had surgery May 18 after a frightening crash in the third turn on Indy’s 2.5-mile oval. The broken wishbone section of the suspension pierced the car’s protective tub and wounded Hinchcliffe’s left leg, causing massive blood loss. After the safety team removed Hinchcliffe from the car, he was taken to a hospital for surgery.

Conor Daly will replace Hinchcliffe this weekend in Detroit for Schmidt Peterson Motorsports. Ryan Briscoe replaced Hinchcliffe in Sunday’s 500 and finished 12th.
