Legendary blues singer Etta James dies

American singer Etta James, known for such favourites as “Something’s Got a Hold on Me,” “The Wallflower” and perhaps most notably “At Last,” has died, according to media reports.

She was 73 and had been diagnosed with Leukemia in 2010. James also suffered from dementia and hepatitis C. According to CNN, she died at Riverside hospital in California.

James burst onto the American music scene as a teenager in the 1955 with the single “The Wallflower,” which became a No. 1 hit on the R&B charts. The song was followed by a series of pop hits and a brief decline in the mid-60s as James struggled to compete with the British Invasion.

By the end of the decade James reemerged with a soul-oriented sound – a style that scored her an opening gig for the Rolling Stones.

The legendary singer rounded off her career with six Grammy wins and an induction in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
