Rock slide closes Highway 1

VANCOUVER — A rock fall closed Highway 1, just 250 metres north of the Hells Gate Air Tram for several hours on Sunday morning.

Crews assessed the slope and say it’s stable. The exact cause of the slide is unknown, but experts suspect roots could be growing in the cracks of the rock.

The highway was open to single-lane alternating traffic only until the rock was cleared and the road is repaired. Before it was shut down, a SUV hit a rock that had fallen on the road. The driver—and sole occupant of the vehicle –wasn’t injured, according to the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure.

The popular tourist attraction Airtram to Hell’s Gate delayed its opening by two hours because of the slide.

The Ministry of Transportation says it will be monitoring the area.
