CALGARY – A 21-year-old man charged with second-degree murder in the deaths of 18-year-old Dakota English, his sister Clarissa English, 24, and her boyfriend, Kyle Devine, 27, made his first court appearance on Thursday.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

Austin Vielle appeared via closed-circuit television, and appeared emotionless as he stared out at the packed courtroom. As each charge was read out, Vielle’s expression remained blank.

Family and friends of the three victims filled the Lethbridge courtroom, watching the man accused of brutally stabbing their loved ones on April 28.  Investigators have said Vielle was an acquaintance of the victims and was known to associate with them.

The Devine and English families said the most painful part was Vielle’s lack of reaction.

“It doesn’t seem to be affecting him,” said Laurie English-Winters, mother of Dakota and Clarissa. “He doesn’t look like he’s losing any sleep over it. I’m just disgusted with him.”

“I wanted to jump in there,” added Allen Devine, Kyle’s father. “I wanted to throw my bottle, but it’s not going to hit him. But I’m f—ing angry at this kid.”

It was requested the court put over Vielle’s case until June 4, so he has time to obtain legal counsel.
