Man rescued from South Saskatchewan River

SASKATOON – A man is recovering after he was pulled from the South Saskatchewan River. The rescue by the Saskatoon Fire Department happened Tuesday afternoon near the Bessborough Hotel.

The water rescue team had been called to the river for a report of a canoe near the weir.

While members of the team were recovering the canoe, another call came in saying a person was swimming in the river.

He was spotted by team members about halfway across the river and appeared to be fatigued. As the water rescue team approached, they said it was apparent the man was very exhausted and struggling.

The canoe was used to transport the man to shore where he was treated for hypothermia and exhaustion before being taken to hospital for further treatment.

Officials later determined the man had no connection to the recovered canoe.

Fire officials are using the incident to remind the public that swimming in the river within city limits is prohibited.
