Port Coquitlam amusement ride company enjoys ‘thrilling’ success

Dynamic Structures made headlines for its significant role in constructing what’s billed as the most powerful optical telescope on Earth. The Port Coqutlam company also builds roller coasters and other amusement park rides.

The soaring number of thrill-seekers in overseas markets such as Asia and the Middle East has helped the company rack up $107 million in contracts in the past six months.

“Asia is all about growth,” said Dynamic Structures CEO Guy Nelson. “It’s all about the middle class wanting to have some fun, having disposable income and we’re bringing rides to that marketplace.”

Having a background in building the world’s most advanced telescopes and having earned the confidence of companies like Disney has helped Dynamic Structures expand in an industry that has its share of ups and downs.

“We realize that Disney and Universal are just one part of the market–10 per cent of the market,” said Nelson. “So 90 per cent of the market was not being satisfied so we took the move to get aggressive and go after that market.”

The recent boom in business could lead to up to 100 new jobs locally.
