Over 2,000 tickets handed out in Sask. during April’s traffic blitz

REGINA – April’s traffic safety blitz in Saskatchewan focused on vulnerable road users. Speeders ended up getting the majority of the tickets.

Police across the province handed out 1,720 speeding and aggressive driving tickets. Only 12 tickets related to vulnerable road users – pedestrians, bicyclists and motorcyclists – and actions that put them in danger were written up.

Officers also charged 41 motorists for impaired driving, 66 tickets for cell phone use and 183 tickets for failing to stop for a red light or stop sign.

Another 173 tickets were given for not, or improperly, using a seatbelt, or for child seat violations.

During the blitz, SGI certified car seat technicians took part in a selective traffic enforcement program (STEP) event. During the two-day event in Prince Albert, 117 child seats and seatbelts were checked and nine car seats and 11 booster seats were given away.

Police handed out 408 tickets during the STEP event, including 176 for speeding or aggressive driving, 73 for not wearing a seat belt and 11 for using a cell phone while driving.
