REGINA – Everyone hates to talk about taxes but the Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CTF) is hoping to change that, at least when it comes to fuel.
The CTF held a gas tax honesty event to reveal the fuel tax rate in Saskatchewan for people filling up their tanks.
Todd MacKay, The CTF Prairie Director, believes people need to start being told how much money they’re paying in fuel taxes.
“Let’s make it transparent,” said MacKay. “Right now they have no idea because gas taxes are hidden. Let’s make it transparent and let people know.”
Saskatchewan drivers pay less in gas taxes than residents of other provinces.
The tax rate in Saskatchewan is 30 per cent. While it is the third lowest in Canada, many drivers were surprised at how high it was.
The money gained form taxes does get put back into maintaining the roads in Saskatchewan thanks to the Fuel Tax Accountability Act.
