Alberta Sustainable Resources says the optimal time to see the phenomena is September through April, when solar activity is highest.
The lights are easiest to see from an area away from urban light pollution. Alberta has two of the world’s largest dark sky preserves: Jasper National Park and Wood Buffalo National Park.
