QUEBEC — The Quebec government is pledging to review the rules regarding the safety and supervision of children in subsidized home daycares after a report about sex abuse involving a young girl.
CBC and Radio-Canada reported Monday the four-year-old was molested last October at a Montreal daycare by a visiting teen. The child told her parents she was left unsupervised in the basement when the assault occurred.
Her parents filed a complaint with police and the administrative body that supervises subsidized home daycares in the area. The teenager pleaded guilty to gross indecency but the daycare owner was not punished and has continued to supervise children.
Quebec Family Minister Francine Charbonneau said the coordinating body has been asked to review its decision and temporarily close the daycare pending those findings.
“We will place an important emphasis on all of our regulations governing the safety of children in daycares,” Charbonneau said Tuesday.
There are 15,000 home daycare operators and 91,000 spots in Quebec.
