VANCOUVER – B.C. financier, industrialist and philanthropist Edgar Kaiser Jr. has died in Vancouver at the age of 69.
Kaiser was born in the U.S. and served as special assistant to presidents Lyndon Johnson and Richard Nixon and was CEO of the Denver Broncos NFL football club before becoming a Canadian citizen in 1980.
He served as CEO of Kaiser Resources and also the Bank of British Columbia before establishing the Kaiser Foundation in 1986 to promote understanding of mental health and addictions issues.
He helped develop the B.C. Directory of Addiction Services in 1987, the first of its kind in Canada, chaired a B.C. Royal Commission on education reform, and was a co-chairman of a Canada-U.S. forum on mental health in 2007.
Premier Christy Clark says that as a business leader, Kaiser was known for his compassion and generosity.
Kaiser, who received the Order of British Columbia in 2003, is survived by his wife Susan and their two children.
