WINNIPEG – It’s time to swap your junk for someone else’s again as the spring giveaway weekend takes place Saturday and Sunday.

The twice-yearly giveaway weekends have become a popular time for Winnipeggers to patrol the streets, looking for usable items others are ready to unload.

However, the weekend has also resulted in occasional problems with people taking items that are not being given away, so the city asks people to follow these guidelines:

  • Take only items at the curb that are marked “Free.”
  • Don’t walk or drive on private lawns or gardens.
  • Don’t discard items on others’ private property.
  • Obey traffic laws – don’t block traffic, park illegally or block driveways.
  • Watch for children.

Those giving away items should:

  • place unwanted household items at the curb on the front street;
  • label each item with a “Free” sticker or sign;
  • store items you don’t want to give away out of sight; and
  • remove items from the curb by dusk on Sunday.

The city asks homeowners not to give away unsafe items, items infested with bedbugs, or toilets with a flush volume of 13 litres or more.
