It could be a quiet summer for Toronto’s elementary students as 73,000 public elementary teachers across Ontario will begin work-to-rule action this coming Monday, ceasing all administrative services until such a time as an agreement is met between the school boards and elementary educators.
Education Minister Liz Sandals doesn’t expect the job action to impact extra-curricular activities. But with summer right around the corner, if the job action persists for over two months, some school-run summer programs maintained by the public elementary teachers working to rule could be affected.
According to the Elementary Teachers Federation of Ontario, the teachers will have no part in EQAO testing which takes place for Grade 3 and 6, writing comments on report cards, filling in for absent principals or conducting any assessment other than those that the teachers deem necessary.
The teachers will also not attend staff or grade meetings with parents.
Here’s a look at all TDSB summer services that could be affected:
1. Elementary Summer School, June 29-July 24, offered at 58 schools under the TDSB. This program is designed to help children build their literacy and numeracy skills and tailored to increase engagement and self-confidence in students.
2. International Languages Elementary Summer Program, June 29-July 31, currently offered at nine schools under the TDSB. This program merges language and cultural learning, and is open to anyone.
3. Model Schools for Inner Cities focusing on vulnerable children facing challenges such as language barriers and poverty. This program features a wide variety of science, technology, engineering and math activities in order to engage inner-city students.
