Dealing with a closed University Bridge

Watch above: It was predicted to be car-mageddan Monday morning as work crews shut down the University Bridge for four months of repair, but it wasn’t. Wendy Winiewski tells us that it appears motorists found a way to reroute their commute.

SASKATOON – It’s the first weekday for the four-month closure of Saskatoon’s University Bridge for rehabilitation. Traffic is being diverted to other crossing points.

City officials have been asking drivers to plan alternative routes and as of 7:30 a.m. Monday, traffic appears to be flowing smoothly.

  • Northwest to the university – Use Circle Drive North Bridge > Preston Avenue
  • Northeast to downtown – Use Circle Drive North Bridge > Warman Road
  • Southwest to the university – Use Circle Drive South Bridge > Circle Drive > College Drive
  • Southeast to downtown – Use 8th Street or Circle Drive > Sid Buckwold Bridge

There were worries traffic would be very heavy on Broadway Bridge, but that has not happened yet.

A single lane remains open on University Bridge for emergency vehicles, Saskatoon Transit, authorized Saskatoon Health Region vehicles and buses contracted by local school boards.

Anyone else attempting to drive over the bridge could be hit with a $90 fine.
