Mothers raise money for family of young pedestrian killed by car

VANCOUVER — They didn’t know Kianna Maunder Moreau, but a group of mothers in Port Coquitlam said they felt compelled to do something for the little girl’s family the moment they learned of her tragic death.

“It doesn’t even really matter at that point. You just know that you’re a Mom and parents you couldn’t even imagine what’s going on through this family’s heartache,” said Tera Loos, who helped organized a lemonade fundraiser on Sunday afternoon.

Kianna died after being hit by a vehicle at a strip mall near Shaughnessy Street and Lions Way on April 19. The driver of an SUV hopped the sidewalk and slammed into four people.

The six-year-old girl died in hospital the following day.

When they learned of the girl’s death, Loos and Marlene McDougall said they wanted to do something to help the family.

“Tera had put out a post on her Facebook [saying] why don’t we do a lemonade stand and I just thought it was the best idea. So, I jumped on board with her and started calling local businesses to see what we could get donated for us.”

Restaurants, businesses and residents in Port Coquitlam donated lemonade, juice and supplies for the fundraiser.

Many stopped by to make a donation, including Mike Ely, who was with Kianna shortly after she was struck, comforting her on the sidewalk.

“It was hard because she tried to stand up. She did try to move around,” said Ely.

“It was very difficult to see her that way, but at the same time, that didn’t hit until after I left. My whole thought was just to stay with her until somebody that could help her was there.”

Since Kianna’s death, Ely has met with the girl’s parents.

“After speaking with the family it did help. They made me feel really good about the fact that I was there with her and that chances are I was the last face she saw.”

All of the money raised from the lemonade fundraiser will be donated to the Kianna Maunder Moreau Memorial Fund.
