WINNIPEG — If you’ve never composted, it’s easy to start. In fact, it’s International Compost Awareness Week from May 3 to 9 and the Green Action Centre has several resources to get you going.

According to the Green Action Centre, by composting at home, you can reduce your household waste by up to 40 per cent and cut down on green house gas emissions.

When your organic materials are sent to a landfill, they get smothered and produce methane gas, which is 21 times more harmful than carbon dioxide.

Instead you can make finished compost — a nutrient-rich natural fertilizer that replenishes the soil for your plants and gardens.

To start composting, collect your food scraps, yard waste and other things in your house like hair, napkins and tissues and form a compost pile. Remember to avoid adding meat and dairy to the pile. Add leaves to balance out the moisture and make sure to give it a stir once and a while. If you don’t have any leaves, shredded paper or sawdust can also be used.

You don’t necessarily need a bin, but many people prefer it. A pile in your backyard will also work.

Stop by The Forks Plaza for a kid-friendly composting kick-off event on May 3 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The Green Action Centre will also host several presentations on how to compost from May 5 to 12.

For more information on how to properly compost, visit the Green Action Centre’s website.
