MONTREAL – A fire in an apartment building in Montreal’s Rosemont district forced about 40 people out on to the street Monday morning, and a supporting wall that collapsed means some residents cannot return soon.
Firefighters were notified at 8:17 a.m. of the blaze in a three-storey building on Masson St. near Avenue d’Orléans, Montreal Fire department Chief of Operations, Denis Deschamps said.

The fire spread quickly from the second floor to the top floor of the building, he said. A supporting wall collapsed but there were no reported injuries. The cause had still not been determined.
About 50 firefighters were needed to quell the blaze and it was brought under control by 9:15 a.m.
Red Cross spokesperson Genevieve Dery said all the residents except those from six of the building’s units should be able to return to their homes Monday.
The Red Cross is providing temporary housing for three people for three days.
The other residents left homeless by the fire have gone to stay with friends or family, she said.
Investigators are treating the incident as suspicious.
