Saskatchewan’s provincial disaster program still handling flood claims from 2010

REGINA – It’s not surprising that last summer’s massive flooding is still being dealt with by Saskatchewan’s provincial disaster program.

But what some may not know is the agency is still dealing with claims from 2010.

Judy Orthner with the Public Safety Department says about 15 applications a week for assistance are still coming in from 2010.

She says in total, the department has received approximately 6,300 claims from private claimants for assistance.

Only about half of the files have been resolved.

Orthner says significant repairs after considerable damage is what’s holding things up – that and a shortage of contractors.

As for 2011, there are have been about 7,500 applications to date and of those about 1,500 have been closed.

Orthner estimates the province has spent $100 million on disaster assistance so far, with some of that to be recouped from the federal government.
