Victims of gun violence in Surrey not cooperating with police

WATCH: There’s a low-level gang war going on in Surrey and Delta that’s putting innocent people at risk. Jeremy Hunka explains what they are fighting over.

The people targeted in the recent wave of shootings in Surrey and Delta are refusing to cooperate with police. Chief Superintendent Bill Fordy Surrey says many are not seeking any help from police, but instead choose to resolve their differences on their own.

Fordy says 11 of the shootings that took place since March are linked to two groups involved in low-level drug trafficking. Members of the groups are of South Asian and Somali descent. Police believe they are competing over drug turf.

When questioned by police, Fordy says many of the victims tell police “not to worry about it” and that “the bullets fell from the sky.”

One of the victims told police he knew the shooter and even knew what the motive was, but did not want to talk to investigators.

“This type of violence is completely unacceptable,” says Fordy. “While victims and suspects in these cases are determined to settle their differences outside the law, we in law enforcement are committed to stopping the violence.”

Since March 9, a total of 17 shootings took place in Surrey and another three in Delta.

Fordy says numerous tactics have been used over the last five weeks to tackle the growing level of violence, including enhanced community engagement. Police have been reaching out to leaders and elders in the Sikh and Somali communities as well as family members of the people involved.

Since mid-March, investigators received many tips from the public that helped identify people who have not been identified before, recover one of the vehicles that was involved in the shootings and arrest a Delta resident, who has now been charged with 12 firearms and drug trafficking offences.
