70-year-old Vernon man arrested after overnight standoff

VERNON – An almost six hour standoff early Friday morning lead to the arrest of a 70-year-old Vernon man. Vernon-North Okanagan RCMP Spokesperson Gord Molendyk says the suspect barricaded himself in his home and refused to leave when police asked him to come out. RCMP were called to the scene around 1 a.m.

“Police were called to the 4900 block of Old Kamloops Road for a report of a 70-year-old man involved in a confrontation with his neighbor,” says Molendyk.

Old Kamloops Road was closed to the public as a safety precaution. He adds the South East District Emergency Response Team was called in to help. Molendyk says the suspect was taken into custody without incident around 6 o’clock Friday morning and he remains in custody while evidence is being collected.

Molendyk adds it was an altercation between the suspect and another resident that started the stand-off. He says a weapon was involved but police aren’t specifying what it was at this point.

“Our officers will remain on the scene conducting their investigation,” says Molendyk.

Old Kamloops Road has reopened to traffic. Molendyk says the suspect is not known to police and no one was hurt during the incident.
