SAINT JOHN – A shutdown at New Brunswick’s Point Lepreau nuclear generating station is being extended to allow for more repairs.

The facility was taken offline March 19 due to problems with a fuelling machine, which has since been repaired.

The shutdown was expected to last two weeks, but will continue as work is done on a heat transport system.

NB Power says the station should begin supplying power Monday after it slowly powers back up.

The utility said earlier that during the shutdown it would access electricity from the U.S. northeast and its own generation facilities.

When the nuclear facility is operating at 100 per cent reactor power, it puts about 660 megawatts on the New Brunswick grid and produces enough electricity for 333,000 homes a year.
