A news release from the cadets says his goal of becoming an air force pilot was derailed when he was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes.

Canyon still went on to get his pilot’s licence, however.

The singer was formerly an honorary colonel of 14 Wing Greenwood in his home province.

Canyon’s responsibilities as a colonel commandant include developing and promoting strong community ties for the cadets.
