OTTAWA – There is a report that former member of Parliament Helena Guergis is suing Prime Minister Stephen Harper and a host of others for defamation.
The CBC is reporting the lawsuit stems from Guergis being forced out of cabinet and the Conservative caucus in April 2010 over allegations against her and her husband, former MP Rahim Jaffer.
The Conservative Party of Canada is also included in the lawsuit.
The CBC report says a statement of claim filed by Guergis contends that unproven allegations of fraud and prostitution were defamatory and damaged her reputation.
A police investigation requested by the government found no evidence of wrongdoing and there were never any charges.
The allegations in the statement of claim have not been proven in court and no statement of defence has been filed, but the prime minister’s office calls the allegations groundless.
“This latest action is ridiculous. The voters have made their minds up on Helena Guergis,” said PMO spokesman Carl Vallee in an email to The Canadian Press.
Guergis ran as an Independent in the May election, but was beaten by Conservative Kellie Leitch.
