Edmonton police nab speeders in 24-hour blitz

EDMONTON – A 24-hour crackdown on Edmonton speeders netted more than 830 drivers who were going 25 kilometres an hour over the speed limit, and several more driving over 50 km/hr above the posted limit.

The Edmonton Police Service says “Operation 24-hours” was “a 24-hour enforcement and education blitz” to reduce the number of speeders motorists in the city.

The crackdown took place from Friday morning to Saturday morning. In addition to 1,105 speeding tickets, officers found nearly 400 other offences, including people not wearing seatbelts or wanted on outstanding warrants.

The EPS has given out more than 12,000 speeding tickets so far this year, not including photo radar tickets.

Meanwhile, three impaired driving checkstops this month have resulted in more than 70 charges for impaired driving.
