EDMONTON — A section of highway in Parkland County, west of Edmonton, was closed Wednesday morning after a man was killed in a two-vehicle collision. The crash happened south of Stony Plain on Highway 627, also known as Garden Valley Road, at Range Road 280 around 9 a.m.

A Ford Escort car and a semi tractor trailer collided head on, and the Jaws of Life had to be used.

Brian Joseph Klapatiuk, a 49-year-old man from the Stony Plain area, was driving the car and was pronounced dead at the scene.

RCMP said area roads were in poor condition on Wednesday morning, however its not known if the weather contributed to the crash. Police, fire crews and EMS were called to the scene, along with an RCMP collision analyst.

A three-kilometre stretch of Highway 627 was closed between Highway 779 and Range Road 275 for about three hours.

That stretch of Highway 627 has seen several fatal collisions in recent years.

In July 2014 one person was killed when car allegedly ran a stop sign where highways 627 and 779 intersect. The previous summer two people were killed in crash involving a semi truck and a smaller passenger vehicle.
