VPD says public can make Craigslist transactions at police station

WATCH: Vancouver Police are making a unique offer hoping to lower the risk of buying bogus tickets on Craigslist. It’s a new layer of security and it could save you from falling victim to a scam. Catherine Urquhart explains.

The Vancouver Police Department says members of the public can use the police station as a safe zone for Craigslist purchases.

People looking for an extra layer of security during face-to-face transactions set up on the online classified website can meet outside the station or in the lobby.

VPD spokesman Brian Montague told Global News:

“People are free to meet in front of the police station or in the lobby as an added security measure when making a Craigslist purchase. They must realize that the police station is a very busy place of business and ask that they just use some common sense if they choose to meet there.”

The San Francisco-based website has long said that Craigslist meetups should take place in public areas. The site recently updated its personal safety page, suggesting that people “consider making high-value exchanges at your local police station.”

The VPD is one of several North American police forces that allow Craigslist exchanges in or near police stations. Other cities include Seattle, Chicago, and Hartford, Connecticut.
