Arrest warrant issued for ex-Leaf Andre Deveaux after vicious on-ice attack in Sweden

Prosecutors in Sweden have issued an arrest warrant for Canadian former NHL enforcer André Deveaux following a violent on-ice incident after he attacked an opponent in a pre-game warm-up last week between Deveaux’s Rogle BK and VIK Vasteras HK.

Video of the incident appears to show the 31-year-old, who played for the Toronto Maple Leafs and New York Rangers, skating towards Vasteras captain Per Helmersson and brutally slash him across the back of the legs before hitting him in the head.

Prosecutor Margareta Danielsson-Olvon told Sweden’s The Local Deveaux is wanted “on suspicion of assault.”

“An investigation is ongoing. We don’t know where he is and have put out a warrant for his arrest,” Danielsson-Olvon told The Local.

Rogle, a second division team from Ängelholm, released Deveaux following the game and the incident has been decried as the worst in the history of Sweden’s domestic hockey league. Rogle ultimately won the game against Vasteras and will move on to the first division.

Deveaux, a native of Welland, Ont., was a sixth round pick of the Montreal Canadiens in the 2002 NHL Draft before making his NHL debut in 2008 with the Toronto Maple Leafs.

His brief stint in the NHL lasted just 31 games, playing 22 games over two seasons with the Maple Leafs before joining the New York Rangers as a free agent in 2011, where he appeared in nine games. In his NHL career Deveaux had no goals, two assists and 104 penalty minutes.
