Girl, 11, waits for liver transplant, strangers eager to help

WINNIPEG — An 11-year old Winnipeg girl is desperately in need of a liver transplant, and now complete strangers are stepping forward.

Allexis Seibrecht was born with liver disease called Biliary Atresia.

At the age of two her mom was told Allexis had an 80 per cent chance of needing a new liver, but she never thought it would be this soon.

“This last year we’ve been to the doctors more, more frequent hospital stays,” said Liz Seibrecht, the single mom of three, “it’s been tough.”

Allexis has had 8 surgeries in the last two years.

The latest health and medical news emailed to you every Sunday.

But Allexis’ story is spreading fast on social media and complete strangers in Winnipeg and across Canada are offering to get tested to see if they’re a match to donate a portion of their liver for Allexis.

“She’s just a little girl and she deserves a great life,” said Quinn Greene, who saw Allexis’ story online and plans to get tested to see if he’s a match.

“I have the right blood type so it’s possible,” said Greene, who already filled out the donor application form, “the chances are difficult there are a lot of process and procedures you have to go through before they can even consider you.”

Transplant Manitoba says one donor has the potential to save or dramatically enhance the lives of eight people. Only 11,550 Manitobans are registered to be a donor.

In the meantime, a GoFundMe account has been set up to raise money for the young family to help pay for living expenses in Toronto when Allexis does go for surgery.

But for now, all Allexis can do is wait, even though time is of the essence for this playful little girl.

Friends are holding a bake sale fundraiser on April 30th at the Indian and Metis Friendship Centre at 45 Robinson Street.

If you’d like to sign up as a donor you can find more information here.
