Suspects formally charged with first-degree murder for deaths in Joliette fire

MONTREAL – Two young men have been formally charged with first-degree murder in connection with a fatal fire in that city that killed two men early Thursday. 
 

Twenty-year-old Maximilien Heon and twenty-five-year-old Dany Laplante-Poirier appeared in court Monday afternoon.

Heon was arrested Sunday afternoon in Ste. Julienne, about 25 kilometres west of Joliette, Sûreté du Québec spokesperson Christine Coulombe said. He is considered a prime suspect.

Marc-André Guérin-Bertrand, 18, and David Deraspe, 24, perished in the 5:30 a.m. fire that destroyed a four-unit apartment building.

Some neighbours reported an explosion before the conflagration broke out.

“I’m not sure” about media reports that the deaths were related to a love triangle involving a woman, SQ Sgt. Benoit Richard said Monday morning:

“We’ll see.”

Richard confirmed that “the accused knew at least one” of the victims.
