GALLERY: Police confront austerity protesters in Quebec City

On Thursday evening, several hundred students gathered outside Quebec’s National Assembly to protest the austerity measures and cuts to social services following the release of the latest provincial budget.

It started peacefully with demonstrators reading poetry — but very quickly turned into a stand off between protesters and police.

As tensions increased, police used force and tear gas to disperse the protesters.

An 18-year-old post-secondary CEGEP student was seriously injured after she was hit in the face with part of a tear gas canister.

Naomie Trudeau-Tremblay said she intends to press charges against the police officer involved in the incident.
