What name do you think William and Kate will name baby number two? The Duchess of Cambridge, Kate Middleton, is due to give birth to her second child some time in mid-to-late April. And people are placing their bets on what the newborn will be named.

Online betting companies Paddy Power, Ladbrokes and Coral all have Elizabeth, Alice and Charlotte in the top three spots for a girl. For a boy, James and Arthur rank in the top two spots on all three gaming sites.

The odds-makers are taking bets on everything from the baby’s name to the due date — even the colour of Kate’s dress on her first appearance with her second child. If you recall, for Prince George’s birth in 2013, the odds-makers weren’t far off the mark. At that time, the odds were high for Alexandra for a girl, and George or James for a boy.

My name predictions are as follows: Given the historical significance of the name, my prediction for a girl is Elizabeth. That, or Victoria.

For a boy, I’m torn between Arthur, Philip, Louis and Albert for a variety of reasons. Because it was the name of the Queen’s father, who became King George VI, I feel Albert is a strong contender. However, Arthur is a middle name of Prince Charles and Prince William. If I had to pick, I’d say Arthur. I thought about James for a boy, but since that’s Kate’s brother’s name, I feel it is less likely to be chosen.

Whichever name they end up choosing, it will no doubt influence future baby names around the world. In 2013, the name George was boosted to 10th place (from 12th) on the list of most popular baby names in England and Wales.

Update – March 31, 2015: The name Alice now ranks in first place for a girl’s name. Bookmaker William Hill cut the odds from 14-1 down to 4-1 on March 31, after a number of bets were made the previous week. Alice is not uncommon in the British Monarchy. Queen Victoria had a daughter named Alice. Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth’s daughter, Princess Anne, was christened Anne Elizabeth Alice Louise. For boys, the name Arthur is now tied for first place on William Hill with Henry and James, with odds of 20-1. On Paddy Power, Arthur is tied for with James as well in first place, but Henry is at 25-1.
