CALGARY – The Airdrie Air Show Society travelled to Rocky View County on a wing and a prayer Tuesday afternoon to try and save the show. It was left homeless after the Calgary Airport Authority said the show would cause significant disruption to air traffic on Calgary’s new runway – claiming it would be the equivalent to shutting down Deerfoot Trail for a weekend.
Rocky View administrators discouraged council from taking on the cost and hassle of arranging extra police and firefighters to work the show, especially on such short notice.

But late Tuesday afternoon, after lots of debate, Rocky View Council voted to give the air show a chance anyway, and supported the air show’s bid to move to Springbank Airport.
“From an aeronautics enthusiast, and someone who enjoys this show, sees what it does for our community, sees what it does for the a community around the province, I’m just so disappointed that they’re having to look at going to other places,” said Peter Brown, Mayor of Airdrie.
Sarah Van Gilst, from the Airdrie Air Show Society, is excited the show has a new home, and says she has a “lot of work to do.”
“There’s nothing better than watching the jets soaring across the sky, so I’m so excited right now. I’m pumped,” said Van Gilst.
The new show will be called Wings over Springbank and if all goes as planned, you should be able to buy tickets to the event July 18 and 19.
