Rourke Chartier named Rockets MVP

KELOWNA – It’s been a great season for the Kelowna Rockets who were second in the Western Hockey League (WHL). The team recognized the players at its annual awards ceremony Sunday night at the Kelowna Community Theatre.

Rourke Chartier had 48 goals in 58 regular season games. The 18-year-old was named the Rockets’ Most Valuable Player and the Most Sportsmanlike.

Team captain Madison Bowey was recognized as Top Defenceman. Devante Stephens was named Rookie of the Year and he credits Bowey for helping him in his success.

“My [defence] partner is Madison Bowey and he’s just a great influence and he tells me all of the things I should be working on,” says Stephens.

The Rockets had the second best record in the WHL regular season and they say it was a team effort.

“I think they’re all very deserving and I know it’s been a long year. It’s been a lot of fun and I think it’s good to have these awards and kind of get acknowledgment for all the guys,” says Bowey.

The season has come to an end but the players say the friendships they’ve made will never end.

“You build so many friendships playing for this team. I don’t think I’m going to lose those guys as friends ever,” says player Tyrell Goulbourne, who is playing in his last season with the team.

The Rockets ended the regular season in first place in the Western Conference and will take on the Tri-City Americans in the first round of the WHL playoffs this Friday at Prospera Place.
