MONTREAL – Thousands of student protesters gathered in downtown Montreal Saturday afternoon.
It was the latest in a string of demonstrations against government austerity measures announced last year.

Organizers said they did not provide a route to police, which made the event illegal under municipal bylaw P-6 but immediate measures were not taken to stop the demonstration.
Student group ASSÉ claims more than 50,000 students will go on strike starting Monday.
