Police were originally called to the Super 8 motel on Barlow Trail N.E. for a check on welfare. Officers forced their way into a hotel room after speaking with a suspect who they say appeared to be agitated and in some kind of medical distress.

According to the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT), a confrontation occurred which led to a “high risk situation.”

Policed used a taser in an attempt to subdue the suspect, which had little impact. A police service weapon was then discharged.
