New Westminster pub offering free shuttle service for patrons

WATCH: The owner of a Queensborough pub is rolling out a shuttle service for patrons – hoping they can enjoy a beverage while leaving the car at home. Jeremy Hunka reports.

“It’s about saving lives. That’s number one,” he says.

That’s what Calvin Basran, the owner of Frankie G’s pub in Queensborough, says about a free shuttle bus he’s offering for all his patrons. Anyone from east Richmond, New Westminster or south Burnaby can be picked up at their home on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights and be driven to the pub, which can be difficult to get to by public transit.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

But Basran admits responsible drinking isn’t his only incentive for launching the service.

“I’d like to see it increase business,” he says. “My main focus was responsible drinking, but I’d like to see business increase.”

He says he’ll be vigilant if people abuse what he’s offering.

“As a pub owner, we have to be aware of our customers, and what they are doing inside the establishment. We do not want to see anyone get overly intoxicated because we’re offering this service. We will cut off people.”

Frankie G’s joins a small number of other Metro Vancouver pubs that offer free shuttle services. A spokesperson with New Westminster Police wouldn’t appear on camera with Global News, but says in general anything that keeps impaired drivers off the road is welcome.
