Ed Darrah rolled up his sleeve and donated blood Monday for the 1,000 time.

“I come from a family that has always given. Not just blood, they gave everything. They do it and my kids do it because we care about others, we really care. We truly, truly care.”

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

“For one person to come in and be that dedicated to the blood system is truly, truly remarkable,” says Lori Bosko of Canadian Blood Services.

Over the course of his 49 years, Darrah has made 189 whole blood donations, 47 platelet donations and 764 plasma donations.

“It’s like a little society of people like the people that go,” says Ed’s wife Isabelle of the people he has met while donating blood, ” The people that are in the high numbers, it’s like another little family.”

The former psychologist says he’s proud of the amount of people he’s been able to help.

“The hope comes to the possibility of someone having a life to be able to continue to have a life. To me what more can you give? Everytime blood passes through my heart I feel like I’m giving a little piece of myself to the person who receives it.”

Next Monday, Darrah says he will be right back at it again.
