Changes to Alberta Municipalities Act to boost transparency, accountability

EDMONTON — Changes that Alberta is proposing to how municipalities operate include a provision that would require councillors to follow codes of conduct.

Councillors would also have to meet a higher standard when it came to holding meetings behind closed doors.

And they would have to adopt multi-year operating and capital plans and adhere to clear and timely rules regarding annexations.

The changes are contained in a bill which has been introduced in the legislature. It’s the first move to update Alberta’s Municipal Government Act.

A review of the act is to be completed by next year and more changes are in the works.

The last major consolidation of the act happened in 1995, after nearly 10 years of review.
