CALGARY – A 20-year-old Calgary man has been charged with speeding after police say he drove his motorcycle at 186 km/hr in a 100 km/hr zone Thursday evening.
A Strathmore Integrated Traffic Unit (ITU) officer spotted the motorcyclist on Country Hills Blvd. about 5 km east of Calgary just before 9 p.m. Thursday.
The officer stopped the driver on the highway near Calgary’s city limits, and determined he wasn’t licensed to operate a motorcycle. (Though he’d completed his written test, he didn’t have his required supervisor with him as a learner).
The driver has been charged with speeding and driving a vehicle of an unauthorized class, and is set to appear in Strathmore Provincial Court on May 25, 2015.
Sgt. Jason Graw with the Strathmore ITU called the incident “concerning” since the driver was putting his own life and the lives of other drivers at risk. Graw said it was dark at the time with a number of other vehicles in the area.
“Fortunately, our officers were able to intercept this young driver and help him to understand that a crash at that speed would be catastrophic,” said Graw. “Of course, the fact that the driver was not even licensed to operate a motorcycle complicates the matter even further.”
Graw said there’s been an increase in the number of speeders in the Strathmore area.
“We’ve seen 10 drivers in the last 30 days doing more than 50 kilometres an hour…and we’ve seen a number in the high 40s as well,” he told Global News.
“It’s nice weather, people are itching to get out there, but we want people to keep in mind that speed kills—bottom line. And our officers will be out there looking for people and keeping the roads safe.”
