Alberta’s own House of Cards cast in playful postcard series

EDMONTON — They’re a cast of characters who bring back intrigue and spark to what was once considered a dry political landscape.

The antics of the Alberta legislature, with floor-crossings and spending scandals, play out like a primetime drama. In other words, they’re a perfect fit for a series of playful postcards designed by the government lobbying firm, Canadian Strategy Group.

For the second year, it has cast 12 political players, including some behind-the-scene playmakers. It wasn’t hard to find a willing cast of characters.

“As a result of last year we had people approaching us,” says Michael Lohner, founder of Canadian Strategy Group.

“We want to have a representation of all four parties and a representation of political staff and people who have been interesting this year.”

All Alberta politicians and their staff are invited to the firm’s open house, about 200 people showed up to Wednesday night’s event. The evening is a way to relax and take the drama down a notch, poking fun at their profession.

The firm crafts the quotes, saying it tries to mimic the ominous theme of the Netflix show, in good humour. The players do have the final say and approval power.

Lohner says the cards aren’t intended for the public, but rather a way to bring all government members together.

“Despite the partisan chip that exists around the legislature, everybody is really in the same job,” he says.
