Amid election speculation, Alberta politicians return to legislature March 10

The Alberta legislature.

EDMONTON – Alberta government house leader Jonathan Denis says politicians will return to the legislature for the spring session on March 10.

Denis says the next budget will be delivered by the end of March, but says no date has been set. The session is slated to run for 10 weeks over three months ending on June 4.

That plan could change radically, however, if Premier Jim Prentice calls an election. Prentice has said a spring vote is possible, and his Progressive Conservatives are currently fast-tracking candidate nominations.

By law, the next election is not to take place until the spring of 2016, but the government does have the option to call it earlier.
