TORONTO – The man known as the Toronto mystery tunnel “Digger” now wants the public to help him raise money to start a new business and create a program to help youth in the community.

A crowdfunding website, with a photograph of Elton McDonald in a hard hat, was launched March 9 and is aptly named “Elton’s Tunnel Vision Fund” accompanied by a goal of $10,000 to help kick-start the project.

“I plan to start a construction business as well as begin a program where I can employ youth from my community,” said a statement on the gofundme website.

“This program will involve youth along with myself dealing with lawn maintenance. This would include cutting and racking grass, installing and uninstalling interlock walk ways and planting trees and creating garden spaces.”

The 22-year-old revealed himself earlier this month as the architect behind the 10-metre-long bunker located in a wooded area near the Rexall Centre on Toronto’s York University campus — the location where tennis will be played for this summer’s Pan Am Games.

The underground hideaway made headlines around the world after Toronto police released details of the tunnel in February seeking information on the builders.

McDonald, who is a construction worker, said the tunnel was a side project meant as a place to hang out and wasn’t constructed for nefarious reasons.

So far, the crowdfunding effort has received five donations for a total of $100 as of 9:30 a.m. Thursday.

“I’m going to make a difference not just for the kids in my community but for kids of Toronto that need a positive big brother to put them on in life,” McDonald wrote on his Facebook page.

“Money raised or no money raised I’m going to pay it forward in some way. There a boss [sic] in me just waiting to burst out.”

The crowdfunding site indicates part of the money raised will also go towards providing youth with breakfast in the mornings, costs for equipment, tools, transportation, and workshops.
