EMSB hearing Tuesday: Save Royal Vale School

MONTREAL – Parents continue to speak out against the English Montreal School Board’s plans to cut or merge schools.

Parents have been trying to persuade the English Montreal School Board (EMSB) to keep Royal Vale High School in NDG.

On Tuesday evening, the issue was hotly debated at an EMSB hearing by parents, students and local community members.

The EMSB is considering whether Royal Vale High School students should move four km to Wagar High School in Cote St. Luc.

Most children who attend Royal Vale live in NDG and many parents like the fact that it is a neighbourhood school.

Another important consideration raised by parents is that students stay in the same building from kindergarten to Grade 11.

On Monday night, NDG borough councillors debated the EMSB’s proposition, tabling a motion against the move.

Following the hearing held this week, the EMSB is expected to decide in January whether Royal Vale will be relocated.

The debate had parents taking-on administrators – a city taking on a borough – and everyone taking on the board.

Paola Samuel attended tonight’s meeting.
